I also bought a bike yesterday. Portland is a *major* bike town. Fairly level (especially east Portland), lots of bike lanes, bike paths, and the buses all have bike racks. Since I don't see doing much trail riding, I wanted a road bike. I checked the stores, and the bikes that interested me were $500 to $800 - a little rich for just getting back into it, and a little to tempting to thieves, too.

So I turned once more to craigslist. Watched for a while, and found this - an older (80's?) Trek for $175. (Darn - the ad has been deleted - I'll get pics/details later) - 700 C wheels, shifters on the down-tubes, and a mix of campy/shimano parts. It rode well, and didn't feel like a tank. I need to mod some things (bar-end shifters, pedals, fenders, rack (?)), but overall a pretty solid bike.

We'll see if I actually ride the dam thing.....
